The arrival of Meng Chee as Walmart US's Chief Product Officer in February of 2020 heralded a sea change in how Walmart approached enterprise-scale Product Design. Chee envisioned a future state of product maturity with Four-in-the-Box (4ITB) teams aligned to vertically-integrated Objectives & Key Results (OKRs) tackling legacy issues with priortized customer-centric and data-driven decision-making.
Chee inherited an organization that was challenged in these four areas:
Chee felt strongly that by leaning into the Product Organization and its roster of product managers, employing customer-centricity based on data, fostering equal representation of Business, Design, Product and Technology in 4ITB teams, aligning to OKRs, and leveraging prioritization and governance, Walmart could effectively lead the market at scale.
As the Subject Matter Expert representing the Product Organization's Center of Excellence in the area of Communications, Engagement and Change Management I worked closely with stakeholders from Corporate Communications and Product Leadership to compose Meng Chee's manifesto on adopting the Product Mindset. Once complete, I was selected to present these materials to the 500+ Product Organization and invited guests in an all-hands meeting. Please find our script and accompanying presentation slides below, or download the PDF.
This presentation and the materials shared became the bedrock upon which the Product Organization grew under Chee's tenure. The document was distributed to the organization and referenced often, and my presentation was well-received by both stakeholders and senior leadership.
